Information about Poplar Regatta:

The Albert Dock is in Beckton, just south of the A13 Commercial Road / Newham Way. Look for signs to City Airport to get you most of the way and then look for Regatta signs. The Car park is behind the clubhouse next to the boat-park, or, when that is full, there is an overflow, on some fairly rough ground, about a third of the way down the course. The marshals will direct you accordingly. To get from here to the clubhouse you just walk along the promenade. Alternatively you can take the Docklands Light Railway to the Royal Albert Dock. You can see the dock from the railway, so it is easy to find your way across.

The Royal Albert Dock is a 2000 metre strip of water, on the north side of London City Airport. There is a wide promenade being constructed along the north side of the water, but at present this is only completed over the second half of the course. However it is still possible to walk or cycle virtually the whole length.

At the finish end of the course there is a brand new boathouse and also a clubhouse, with changing rooms and a very smart restaurant and bar on the first floor. There is also casual food of the burger and ham roll variety in a tented area in front of the clubhouse.

In front of the boathouse there are a small number of tables and chairs, but if you want to guarantee having somewhere to sit and serve your picnic, I would suggest you bring your own. There is a grass area under construction and this may be available for picnics this year. If it is, it will probably be used by the boys as last year they had to hang around near the boats to find any shade from the sun. Along the promenade there are a number of trees, but as these will take sometime to provide any real shade there is little shelter from sun, rain or wind (the latter being a fairly consistent feature of the Dock). You are advised to take a stout Umbrella/Parasol for yourself and a hat and plenty of suntan lotion for yourself and the boys.
